Fashion shows at charity events are increasingly getting popular. And it makes sense. No doubt we love to see good looking women and men in trendy new designs on a catwalk. Combine that with philanthropy and eco-friendly clothing, and you have a winner – a night of glamour for a good cause in a better world!
On November 11, 2009, the sisters of Kappa Alpha Theta had their KATwalk fashion show to benefit CASA, a not for profit that helps children. The show had MIT students modeling clothes from designer and boutiques from the Boston area. We heard from Shubhra Chandra that Shubrah.com was invited to participate in the show to showcase her line of eco-friendly clothing.
The event is an annual fashion show that is organized by M.I.T.’s sorority students from Kappa Alpha Theta and is a fundraiser for a worthy non-profit called CASA. CASA helps abused and neglected children by training and funding volunteers to represent these children and stay with them until they find a permanent home. Funds raised from the KATwalk events are donated to CASA. This year was the third year for the KATwalk fundraiser.
The event was held at M.I.T.’s Walker Memorial Building along Memorial Drive in Cambridge, MA (US). The venue was in a glorious hall with beautiful high ceilings supported by massive pillars and giant paintings as a backdrop on the walls. The catwalk was set up on the main floor, with rows of chairs for guests. Along the balcony, surrounding the entire hall, where students gathered to cheer the proceedings below.
There were several designers that sponsored the event and it included Shubhrah, Marc Jacobs, Club Monaco, Zeynep Miceli and others.
Shubrah.com showcased select pieces from their eco friendly collection of men’s and women’s evening and casual wear. The MC for the evening, introduced Shubrah.com as an emerging Boston area design company to be watched for fusion and environmentally conscious designs. 20 MIT college students modeled the eco-friendly clothing collection to music and choreography created by the students. The music they picked for this part of the show was fusion, with some western, bollywood and bhangra, all mixed live by the student DJ. The show was a great success, with a live auction as well as two very talented groups of MIT students dancing and singing for the audience. There was also a segment called "MIT couture" that was created by students which was a tongue-in-cheek take on the college insignia clothing sold on the MIT campus. All-in-all, a wonderful event for a great cause.
